The Latin word 'tenebrae' or 'tenieblas' in Spanish means darkness. The Rite of Tenebrae is celebrated to emphasize the momentary victory of darkness over the light of the world. The celebration of this rite is part of the preparation for our entry into the holiest period in the liturgical calendar, the Easter Triduo of our Lord Jesus Christ.
It is usually performed on the evening of Holy Wednesday after the celebration of the Mass. The dramatic celebration of its liturgy where the candles are gradually extinguished until the whole church is dark is what is more exciting for the believers to understand what the holy roles of the Holy Days mean.
With the spread of darkness, the distinctive sound of the matraca, an instrument used instead of banging or bells during Holy Days, will emerge. Making noise or making it sound loudly is the commemoration of the earthquake that occurred on the day that the Lord Jesus Christ sacrificed his life on the Cross.
