The Lord clearly teaches us that he does not intend for marriage to be short-lived but eternal. This is a responsibility not only to the spouse, not only to the Family, but to God as given in the Book of Genesis: “This is the reason why a man leaves his father and mother, he joins his wife, and they become one.” (Genesis 2:24). So the Church strongly teaches that marriage is sanctified by Jesus as a Sacrament, so it should be preserved and appreciated. (CCC, 1613)
