One of the old traditions of our Church is the veiling or covering of images when the Holy Days are approaching. It is done every fifth Sunday of Lent which is also called "Passion Sunday" in the old Church calendar. Currently it is performed on Saturday, evening mass before Domingo de Lazaro.
In the old Church calendar, today's Gospel is about Jesus' declaration of his divinity which the Jews could not accept so they tried to kill him. They did not succeed because Jesus hid himself here, he did not hide in any part of the temple, but he disappeared from their sight and left. This is a great sign of his divinity.
In the new calendar, this gospel is read on Thursday of the 5th Sunday of Lent. If the greatness of God is hidden, the greatness of his followers should also be hidden. These covers will not be removed until the Easter Vigil on the night of Sabado de Gloria.
It also helps with eye fasting and focuses our attention on the most important part of the Catholic faith: the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. This is the greatest mystery in our faith. If Jesus did not suffer, die, and rise again, there would be no Church, no forgiveness of sins.
*The cloth used for veiling, according to the rules of the Roman Missal, the Breviary and the Ceremonial Episcoporum, on the Images of the Cross, of the Lord, of the Blessed Virgin and of the Saints is purple cloth plain and without decoration. (S.R.C. 3638 ad. 11)
When the images are covered, we will see nothing but purple cloths. Our church seems to have lost its 'color', it becomes sad, it seems to be in a void. It invites us to meditate on the death of the Lord Jesus, as we await the rebirth of the light and color of our houses of prayer, and of our hearts, on the Night of the Resurrection.
