The feast of Nuestra Señora De Los Siete Dolores de Sabang was celebrated on Sunday, September 15, 2024, in the City of Baliwag. The celebration began with the rite of dressing the virgin, followed by the Holy Mass led by Monsignor Filemon Capiral, H.P., Parish Priest, with Father Flormonico Cadiz, Ph.D., Father Florentino Concepcion, and Father Francis Protacio S . Cortez, III.
In his homily, Monsignor Capiral emphasized Mary's unparalleled sacrifice and love for her son Jesus. According to him, "We can clearly see in Mother Mary, or Our Lady of Sorrow, her bearing many crosses as the mother of Jesus. He may not have borne physically like our Lord, but emotionally, psychologically and perhaps even physically, he has borne many crosses."
After the Mass, there was a majestic procession attended by eleven (11) chariots containing images depicting the Seven Passions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Also featured in the procession are images of Sto. Cristo de Guia, Sta. Maria Magdalena, San Juan Evangelista, and Nuestra Señora de los Siete Dolores.
Devotion to the seven sufferings of Mary is one of the old devotions to the dear virgin dedicated to scenes in the scriptures where the suffering suffered by the dear virgin for the sake of Jesus can be traced. Mary's seven torments are as follows:
1. Simeon's Prophecy on the baby Jesus (Luke 2:34) 2. The Flight into Egypt of the Holy Children (Matthew 2:13) 3. The Disappearance of the Child Jesus for Three Days (Luke 2:43) 4. The Encounter of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross (Luke 23:26) 5. The Death of Jesus on the Cross, with his Mother standing at the foot of the Cross (John 19:25) 6. The Descent from the Cross of Jesus, where Mary held the body of Jesus (Matthew 27:57) 7. The Burial of Jesus (John 19:40)
Meanwhile, the Blessed Virgin suffering is also called Mater Dolorosa. In this regard, there were two feasts dedicated to Mary's sorrows before the Second Vatican Council. The feast was originated by a provincial synod of Cologne (1413) to annul the crimes of the iconoclast Hussites. The second is associated with the order of Servites whose main devotion is the Seven Sorrows or hapis. It was founded in 1668, although the devotion has existed since 1239.
