With the death of Pope Francis on Monday, the Diocese of Rome and indeed the entire church are under the Sede Vacante. Sede vacante is a Latin word that, if we translate it, means "Vacant Seat". We often hear this word when an Archdiocese or Diocese is without a presiding Bishop.
The cathedra or "throne" in the Basilica of St. John Lateran is the official seat of the Pope as Bishop of the Diocese of Rome. It becomes vacant when the Pope resigns or dies while in office.
In these times of mourning for the Church, prayers continue for the Peace of the Late Pope. Likewise, the Cardinals, as well as those with important roles, are beginning to gather to prepare for the work that will take place in the coming days.
Let us continue to pray for our late Pope Francis, as well as our Church, so that the Risen Lord may continue to grant us hope and fervent faith for the future of our Church.
